“The Lion of Anacostia”
Washington DC
35’ X 22’
I painted this mural in the historic Anacostia neighborhood of Washington D.C. titled “The Lion of Anacostia” The artwork is inspired by the Lion of Anacostia himself, Fredrick Douglas and symbolizes the strength, resilience, and legacy as the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century. The lion’s gaze towards a portal wrapped in gold captures a journey towards the colorful and bright future while the swirling, colorful clouds in the background add depth and energy representing the ongoing evolution of the Anacostia neighborhood.
This mural serves as a tribute to Anacostia’s vibrant culture and to Douglass’s legacy, honoring his presence as both a historical figure and a symbol of ongoing influential empowerment within the community. The mural is located just a few blocks from Fredrick Douglas’s estate, a National Historic Site.
This Public Art piece was in partnership with the @anacostiabid @arttogogo and @muralsdc and is one of many coming to the Anacostia neighborhood which has been pronounced Washington DC’s Arts and Culture District.
